Australia - Cairns to Sydney

Home World Tour Index Australia Index

Next headed back to Perth to catch a flight to Cairns in Queensland, far top right hand corner of Australia. It was a very short night flight, so not much sleep.

>>>Daintree National Park - over night trip, we stayed in dorms only minutes  from the beach so a lot of relaxing done

>>>Great Barrier Reef - Day trip, fantastic. Blue skies and water, lots of snorkelling, lots of fish - amazing to see. As I can't swim, it was a bit daunting to start with when you first put you head in the water. I got a fright as it was so so clear, fish and coral just a feet away, it was like sticking your head into an Aquarium.

>>>Whitsunday Islands - Three day/2night trip, again amazing. More blue skies and sea, pure white sandy beaches, snorkelling etc. At night the sky was so so clear every star must have been out.>>> Life is tough but someone has to do it!!!

>>>Frazer Island - Largest sand island       (I think) in the world. We hired a 4x4 again for 3 days/2 nights ....again amazing. When we first arrived we weren't too sure what to expect. Got off the ferry and straight onto a very steep hill, then drove through "bushy' area, one road track, praying we wouldn't meet anyone coming towards us, travelling about 20-30km per hour. Then we finally hit the beach, wow - travelled along this about 60-80km per hour.

>>>Byron Bay - Nice place, we stayed in the town but the surrounding areas had some fantastic views. The town was quite small which was nice, but I'd say it would get pretty messy at night. Just as we were leaving, Schoolies Week started, aged around 18 years and getting pretty tarted up and pretty drunk- a good time to leave. Did a lovely walk up to their lighthouse.

On our last night there we were to cook in the hostel, fish, potatoes, and veg. But the kitchen was so bust and nobody was cleaning up after themselves. So we didn't bother, headed out to get take away pizza and eat it on the beach.

It as a clear night with lots of people milling around - then I noticed a crack in the sky out at sea, it got bigger and redder, we wondered what it was!! The one of the most amazing things happened, out popped the moon - the biggest, the reddest moon I have ever seen.....

>>>Nimbin - Day trip from Byron, a strange little town - its full of hippies, selling a lot of cakes with an added extra!!!!!!! Hash!

>>>Back to Sydney - We are near the end of our fantastic trip to Oz - we are in the middle of our last week here, washing, packing and lots of familiar sight seeing, its good to be back.

So, our time in Australia is nearly at an end. It's been a very interesting & enjoyable 11 months & now we look forward to Asia & our final leg to home.
